I saw generally some awesome LA fashions but something still bothers me about seeing too much of the same. Ladies my advise for festival gear is to think outside the box whenever possible while still dressing for your body type. Remember not all bootys are created equal. Having great style means knowing how to complete the package. A great look can be offset by one bad choice such as over accessorizing, having conflicting themes between makeup and hair or even having the wrong shoes. When in doubt I advise less is more. Taking off a bracelet or accessory can be the difference between looking like you tried to hard or are a natural fashionista. That said - here are some fabulous looks via #instagram that outline a current trend I’ve seen. Smokey eyes complete this retro black and white pattern trend as well as simple white kitten heals. Black bow accents can accent a nice evening look however carefully consider the placement! Not all outfits are created equal. Men- many of you over the years have asked for my fashionable insights… Intrigued by these requests, I have decided to blog about the subject. Here are a few admirable ensembles with shape, great structure, interesting use of colors and of course layering. Knowing how to layer in the right ways is key and can make any body type look slimmer, or more masculine. My best advise to men is- find a look you like in a magazine or otherwise and literally duplicate it in the mirror with your own wardrobe pieces. Stick to colors you know look good- but maybe try one daring choice to set it off. Never ever wear your gym shoes with skinny jeans and attempt to match color scheme whenever possible. If you think you look stupid, your probably will portray that to others… Confidence makes up for any fashion discrepancies regardless of gender. When in doubt - wear a fitted comfortable black tee with fitted or slim cut dark wash denim…. make it funky with a different colored vest, sweater or jacket but always have matching shoes. You don’t have to be a GQ to have good style- you just have to be willing to give a shit enough to make a little effort. :) #menfashion #mensfashion #style #men #GQ #thriftriot

Can’t wait to expo my 2013 swimwear line entitled “Pink Lemonade” this May 11th at the Alternative Fashion Society Fashion Show - G - String. My Vintage inspired designs flatter the female figure and accentuate all the right areas. I’ve spent months dedicated to making a swim line that I know will blow anyone out of the water. It’s cheeky, fun, retro, and above all it works for a multitude of body types. A swim suit that says with a red lipstick kiss - “damn right it’s better than yours!”

Fashion Comes From Within

My stepmother has been raiding the closets of the deceased, attending estate and yard sales, as well as trade shows for what seems like 100 years. Her house is, and probably always will be, a stylists dream come true. She literally has everything from sequined handbags from the 1920’s to voodoo dolls from terrifying neighborhoods in the southern most districts of New Orleans. Her dinning room is more inspirational for an up and coming designer than any classroom or commercial department store.

I started making clothes as a novelty; something I could do in my spare time to keep up with trends and maybe even set some new ones. I would take discarded thrift store clothing from my stepmothers shop and reinvent the garment in a new contemporary way. Initially, I began slashing up old tee shirts, sewing simple sack dresses, making fringe out of old leather and hand sewing bags out of old grandma blankets I found at the mission. Each piece was even more interesting than the next and everywhere I wore my creations people began to take note. I also began collecting Vintage pieces that I liked and could pair with my own designs or use to create new looks based on what was on trend at that time.

“Pink Lemonade” My latest summer swimwear line will pull form these Vintage escapades, late night ripping fabric sessions, and endless thrifting lifetimes. The line includes high waisted bottoms, retro tops, body enhancing lines and pastel colors. I want to create a swim line that celebrates size, femininity, and the lost lost art of leaving something to the imagination. Look for the lines debut in the coming weeks.

Winter, 2009 I walked with over 9,000 other design graduates into a ceremony where even the Dean of Students seemed somber. The economy had taken a nosedive and the once thriving market for home buying, development, design and jobs had supremely tanked.

“Its tough out there, but we wish you the best.”

It was the general send off from our ceremonial speakers that day and I, in a euphoric state post grad, did not register the severity of those words.

Struggle and heartache don’t even begin to describe the following months in my job search. I spent hours on the computer on what seemed like a mad-witch-hunt for a job that even closely resembled what I had thought I had been working towards. I found myself questioning everything. What was a Design Professional supposed to do anyways? What did this piece of paper signed and stamped even grant me? I couldn’t even get a response email back 95% of the time from potential employers upon sending my resume. I was devastated.

Fast forward to Spring 2010- roughly one year after my graduation from Arizona State. Three jobs later I now had experienced the wildest of wild employment adventures including scintillating things like working retail in a shoe department, selling Mexican food, working in a bar and crafting the fine art of Martini slinger. I had now experienced the Nirvana of minimum wage plus tips, sales commissions from half priced designer shoes and my most favorite of all experiences the music of a screaming boss. Each experience however taught me invaluable lessons about who I was and what I really wanted from life.

When she came back to me- this original idea to design something new- I was just as stubborn about following through as I was the first time. To be a successful artist in any regard is as difficult as it is a long shot. But what my brief time post-grad had taught me is that finding something that makes you happy is more important and you will be more inclined to excel, than if you do something that you hate.

After probably another year and a half of really hard lessons, broken hearts, apartment moves, changing jobs and late night sewing sessions I began to allow this idea to really formulate in my mind and become the real objective of my life. Laughably I can tell you, to be a clothing designer is just as difficult as I imagined. Never without a shortage of obstacles I found solace in the deep blue hours of evenings spent creating in the caliber I always knew I was capable. My craft evolved even further when I moved back to Phoenix the home of my academic life at ASU, and began putting on fashion shows with other local designers.
